Evaluating VoIP QoS performance at IMS next generation network

This work presents an analysis of Quality of Service (QoS) performance characteristics of voice transmission over IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) in a Next Generation Network architecture aiming to enhance customer satisfaction and enable novel service provisioning. Measurements of one way end-to-end packet delay; jitter, packet loss, PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation Speech Quality) and call set-up time are undertaken using a plethora of different access network bandwidth load. In this paper, an introduction of IMS NGN architecture related to both core and access network is initially reviewed, along with the QoS configuration settings of the network elements regarding VoIP telephony calls. Then, a detailed analysis of the access network QoS is being performed, using a business VoIP leased line as an access network line, resulting in performance measurements for voice transmission, under different ranges of access network line bandwidth load. Finally, suggestions for performance enhancement through optimization of the network’s operating characteristics are made, based on both IP protocol settings and SIP protocol renegotiation mechanisms.
